A New Year represents the opportunity to reinvent your life, let go of the past and set the intentions and purpose for your days to come. With this in mind, I’ve been thinking lately about “my word” for this year.  The word that defines the space I am in now and then visiting a new word later this year to measure growth.  I like the idea of adopting a word for each chapter in life, almost like the bold heading to the pages you have yet to live.

A couple of words came to mind as I thought about this, but I settled on one in the end that I have been working the hardest at lately.

Courage: The quality of mind or spirit that enables one to face difficulty, fear, or vicissitudes with self-possession, confidence, and resolution.

I chose this word because it is what resonates with me most as we start off 2017 and I prepare for my travel adventure ahead.  I will be honest, there have been many moments where I take a step back completely fearful and wonder if I am designing a life that takes more courage and strength than I truly possess.  You know, those moments when you start to doubt your plan and question your abilities letting the “what if’s” get in the way.   Courage to me is not having your mind completely free of these thoughts, it is facing them and continuing to move forward with your head up anyway.  Facing fear in the face, politely asking it to step aside and marching forward towards your desired destiny.

Remember the lion in The Wizard of Oz?  He was always my favorite…

I have found through my years that I am usually stronger than I realize and I can recognize that when I allow my true and genuine spirit to speak I am already at peace, confident, fearless and capable.  It is often the voices of others, society and past experiences that are the culprits that get in the way.  Fear of judgement, fear of failure, fear of being different, fear of change, fear of sickness, fear of being alone, the list goes on for all of us in our own ways…  And most often these are not even our OWN voices filling our heads.  They are simply the noise that has been created from our surroundings.

This year I strive to continue to listen to my own voice the loudest, trust in the process and journey and continue to give myself words of encouragement through all of the days to come.  A wise woman recently told me to treat yourself like you would your best friend.  If you are defeated, make a warm cup of tea, grab a comforting book, put on soothing music, draw a bath.  Whatever it is you are feeling, honor it… give yourself the love that you seek and allow the emotion to pass. Courage will follow.  If you fall, forgive yourself.  The beauty of another day is similar to that of another year.  You can simply get back up and try again.

This year my intention is to hold courage close and I encourage you to join me.  Have courage to go after your dreams, courage to take the next step, courage to do something you never thought possible, courage to believe YOU CAN, no matter what.

“Your life is a sacred journey. It is about change, growth, discovery, movement, transformation, continuously expanding your vision of what is possible, stretching your soul, learning to see clearly and deeply, listening to your intuition, taking courageous challenges at every step along the way. You are on the path… exactly where you are meant to be right now… And from here, you can only go forward, shaping your life story into a magnificent tale of triumph, of healing, of courage, of beauty, of wisdom, of power, of dignity, and of love.” ~ by Caroline Adams
